LONDON MAYOR SADIQ KHAN ON THE MISS-USE
OF HOMELESSNESS DATA
I’m Papa, social entrepreneur, activist and CSR specialist dedicated to end homelessness in the UK.
Racism sucks, right? Then well done to Sadiq Khan.
When homeless charities aired their concerns that the Home Office was deporting and targeting homeless EU foreign nationals, his office stopped their access to the Combined Homelessness and Information Network (CHAIN) database. CHAIN gets a mention in my book, and is a great resource.
During the period access to the information was given, there was a 40% increase in the number of EU nationals detained, and an 8% increase in forced returns (deportations), and a special 9% rise of specifically central eastern Europeans. As Martha Spurrier, the director of Liberty pointed out, now people sleeping rough will be scared to seek support for fear of deportation.
Only a month on the job, emails between the Home Office and the Mayor’s Office show Sadiq Khan was concerned about their access, and the charities raising their voices sealed the deal. He is working through a new memorandum of understanding with the Home Office to permit them access to the data on stricter terms, and seeks their support in helping him end homelessness in London.
